Is your skin often too dry? Do you find yourself with itching, irritated skin? When your skin’s natural barriers aren’t enough to keep it hydrated and healthy, you may have to aid your skin in keeping its moisture.
Prevent dry skin after bathing or showering. Dry skin can often become worse after cleaning yourself. Soaps and hot water naturally break down your skin’s defenses. You can negate some of the drying effects of bathing, though. Be sure to keep the bathroom door closed while showering or bathing and limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes. Use warm rather than hot water. Be sure to wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil but avoid using so much that you see a thick lather. Blot your skin gently dry with a towel—don’t rub. Re-hydrate your skin by applying a healthy amount of moisturizer immediately after drying your skin.
Swap out lotions for ointments and creams. Lotions can be too harsh on dry skin. Ointments and creams are less irritating. When considering a cream or ointment, looks for products that contain an oil such as olive oil or jojoba oil. Shea butter is another good alternative to lotion. When looking for a skin product that works for your dry skin, also consider looking for these ingredients: lactic acid, urea, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, and petrolatum.
Wear a lip balm. Lip balms are good for preventing your lips drying out, but look for one that doesn’t irritate you. If you feel a tingling sensation after applying the lip balm, switch to one that doesn’t cause a reaction.
Use cleaning products that are gentle and unscented. Some products are simply too harsh for dry skin. Don’t use deodorant soaps, or soaps that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). These products can break down your natural oils too much. Give your skin a chance to recover those oils by avoiding these products.
Wear gloves. If you suffer from dry skin, you’ve likely noticed when your hands feel dried out. Gloves can protect your hands against this. If you’re going out in the cold, glove up. If you’re going to do something that requires getting your hands wet or, worse, exposes them to chemicals, greases, or other such substances, wear gloves.
Moisturize the air. Get a humidifier for your home or see if there is a humidifier system attached to your heating system.
