How Stress Can Effect Your Skin Health

How_Stress_Affects_Your_Skin

We all know stress is bad for your health. How does it affect your skin? Apparently stress can aggravate nearly every skin problem out there.

“Any skin condition can be made worse from stress,” says Natalie Semchyshyn, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University. “Stress, especially chronic stress, changes levels of certain hormones in your body, like cortisol, which can affect your immune system.”

And that can wreak havoc with your skin.

Hives, like those proudly displayed on Anne Hathaway’s chest, can happen to anyone, even if you’re not prone to skin problems.

“One of the major jobs of our skin is to block things out that we don’t want to come in. It’s the protective wrapper of the body,” explains Dr. Semchyshyn.

Acne is probably the most well-known example of a skin condition exacerbated by stress: Think of a teen who has a terrible acne flare right before final exams.

Rosacea is another skin condition closely related to your mental state: Flushing, swelling, and uneven skin are hallmarks of rosacea. “One of the triggers [of flushing] is stress, if you feel embarrassed, or even good stress like working really hard on something,” says Dr. Semchyshyn. “It’s a visible response to stress going on inside your body.”

Psychological stress can also trigger a psoriasis flare-up—red, scaly patches of skin that are itchy and sometimes painful—as well as an eczema flare (an itchy rash).

The silver lining in the skin-stress connection? Managing your stress can often provide the solution, or part of the solution, says Dr. Semchyshyn. She points to a growing body of research that suggests stress-relief techniques—including hypnosis, guided-imagery meditation, and mindfulness meditation—may also help calm your complexion.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_Medium Treatment Areas

If you are debating to have laser hair treatments done you probably have a few questions about it. Here are a few of Laser Smooths FAQ’s.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a hair removal procedure that has been practiced since 1997. It is a procedure which is performed by a specially-trained laser specialist or doctor, and is conducted by pointing a long pulse laser at a region of desired hair removal. The ultimate result of laser hair removal is disabling hair follicles from producing hair, resulting in permanent hair removal. Since hair grows in cycles, to completely eliminate hair growth, 6-8 treatments (at intervals of 8-12 weeks) are needed to achieve the desired result.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The success of laser hair removal depends upon a number of variables, such as hair and skin pigmentation, as well as coarseness of hair. Lasers used for permanent hair removal emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigments in hair. If the hair is coarse, or if the surrounding skin is lighter than the pigment of the hair, the pigment in the hair will better absorb the heat from the laser, thereby destroying the hair follicle. In order to prevent burning of the surrounding skin during laser treatments, the laser produces a narrow bandwidth, which concentrates the laser on the hair. Although, when a laser beam is emitted, heat is transferred from the hair to the surrounding skin for several milliseconds after the pulse. Because of this, some lasers have cooling attachments to surround the skin, which help to absorb heat that is transmitted to the skin during a laser treatment.

Is laser hair removal for men?

Men and women utilize laser treatment for permanent hair removal.

Keep Your Skin Safe This Summer

Laser Smooth Company_Safe_and_effective

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start to summer. Make sure to keep your skin safe!

This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and, with temperatures forecast to warm up, more people will be heading out into the California sunshine.

But the start of summer should also be a time to remember the need to protect against too much exposure, which can lead to sunburns and increased risk of developing melanoma, according to health experts.

Dr. Parminder Sidhu, oncologist at Mercy Medical Center, highly advises people to limit their sun exposure, as well as exposure to tanning beds that generate extreme levels of ultraviolet rays.

Melanoma is the most severe form of skin cancer that develops in the cells giving pigment to the skin.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., and exposure to the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer, according to the Johns Hopkins health library.

It’s especially important for children to be protected from severe sunburns because their skin cells still are dividing, Sidhu said. If the dividing skin cells are damaged severely by the sun, causing them to lose control, Sidhu said there is a higher risk of those cells turning cancerous later in life. When cells lose control, they will make mistakes resulting in cancerous cells continuing to divide rather than die.

Dr. Laurence Altshuler, director of oncology at Southwestern Regional Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., said being safe in the sun is an important part of avoiding skin cancer.

“The worst risk for melanoma is sunburn,” Altshuler said in a telephone interview. “It has more adverse effect on the skin.”

Applying sunscreen every two hours while in direct sunlight could be the solution to a painful sunburn, he said. Avoiding a severe sunburn could be the reason skin cancer cells don’t develop or multiply.

No one is completely free from the risk of contracting melanoma, but many preventive measures can be taken.

Foods loaded with antioxidants, citrus fruits, nuts and leafy green vegetables are all natural protectors people can incorporate in their daily diets to help protect their skin from changes that can lead to skin cancers.

According to Altshuler, carrots can reduce the risk of sunburns and avocados can reduce skin damage from the sun.

“Get you a Corona and put a lime in it, then eat some guacamole,” Altshuler said.

He also recommends a sunscreen with an SPF level between 30 and 50. While there are sunscreens with higher SPF levels, he said, the amount of protection offered by those formulas is hardly better than the 98 percent protection found in SPF 50.

And, in any case, be sure to reapply the sunscreen frequently.

“All sunscreen deteriorates after two hours no matter what sunscreen you have,” Altshuler said.

Individuals with many, irregular or large moles have the highest risk of contracting melanoma and should have their skin evaluated regularly. Moles that are different in texture from one end to the other, have an abnormal growth overtime, bleed easily or don’t seem to heal should be a warning sign and should be looked at by a doctor, Altshuler said.

According to the American Cancer Society, individuals with red hair, blond hair, blue eyes or fair skin also have a higher risk for developing melanoma.

Darker-skinned individuals have less risk because the greater amount of pigment in their skin offers greater protection from UV rays. Nevertheless, Sidhu said, individuals with darker skin do have an increased chance of developing melanoma on their soles and palms.

Frequent checkups by a dermatologist are important, Sidhu said, because melanoma cases caught early have a good chance of being cured As an oncologist, Sidhu says he normally sees patients whose stage 3 or 4 cancers are too advanced to be stopped.

Through targeted chemotherapy, only attacking the cancerous cells instead of all cells, many patients have been able to go into remission fighting off the disease for a period of time.

“Most people will get melanoma back and will eventually become immune to the drugs,” Sidhu said.

5 Bad Shower Habits To Avoid

Bad_Shower_Habits

Cleanliness is an important part of your health in general, but how you keep clean can effect your skin. Do you have any habits that are actually bad for your skin? Here are 5 bad habits to avoid in the shower.

Showers can be harmful. A bad shower routine can cause dry skin, irritation and even body acne. Thus, it might be time that you take another look at your shower routine. Here are 5 bad shower habits to get rid of.

Sometimes a shower is just so good that no one can blame you if you stay in there a few minutes longer than necessary and turn up the heat just a little more, while you consider life’s issue or plan out your day. The only issue with that is you’re wrecking your skin. Here are 5 things to consider:Bad showering habits

Extended showers:

Although, spending 20 minutes in the shower can be a great reward to a long day or a way to ease into your morning. However, that may be quite impractical. Skin Care experts recommend taking short showers, lasting 5 to 10 minutes to avoid drying out your skin. So leave the shaving and luxuriating to another time.

Way too hot:

It’s important to not take overly hot showers in order to protect the natural moisture of your skin. Hot showers take away your body’s natural oil barrier, which the body requires to keep your skin moist and smooth. Dr. Melissa Piliang of the Cleveland Clinic suggested the perfect temperature to shower in is 112 degrees Fahrenheit or lower in order to wash away dirt and bacteria.

Lack of moisture:

Using harsh soaps and not moisturizing after is what causes dry skin most often. Soaps can be harsh depending on the way your skin reacts to it, so if the soap leaves a filmy substance or dries out your skin, it’s no good for you. Also, avoid any soaps or cleansing product with heavy fragrances.

Bad showering habits

The wrong soap:

Everyone’s skin is different but the ingredients the soap possesses is the important factor. Stick to fragrance-free soaps, especially for sensitive skin. If you have dry skin, use soap that includes glycerin, which is free of synthetic chemicals and retains moisture.  Avoid soaps with high acid content or pH value as well.

Stop using a washcloth:

It’s quite to reuse the same washcloth daily and simply hang it up in the shower until the next shower. But that’s bad. First, scrubbing too hard with a cloth can leave your skin red and irritated. Sure, it’s a great way to reach all deep parts but leaving the wet rag in the moist environment such as the shower also fosters a breeding place for bacteria to thrive and then be reapplied to your skin and face.

Loofahs, sponges or any other applicators are just the same. They all have the risk of growing bacteria and spreading that to your skin and can even cause infections. Some applications may be too abrasive and form other microscopic skin injuries. Simply apply soap directly to your skin instead.

Boost And Protect Collagen Production By What You Eat For Smooth Skin

Laser Smooth Company_laser hair removal posttreatment

Collagen is an important structural protein that is the main part of our skin, bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. Collagen helps improve skin elasticity which is what keeps your skin smooth and young looking. Eating certain foods can help boost and protect collagen production in our body.

Do you love all things anti ageing and anything that contributes to youthful looking skin? Well you’re probably familiar with collagen, a common ingredient found in our creams to improve skin strength and firmness. It’s the main structural protein in the human body found not only in our skin but also in our bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. It is also abundant in our corneas, blood vessels, the gut, discs and the dentin in our teeth.

I’ve always been curious about whether the collagen we apply topically on our skin actually gets absorbed and have the same effect as the collagen we consume.

I have discovered that there are different forms of collagen used in the beauty industry, which can penetrate the deep skin layers, as well as beauty treatments that can stimulate new collagen growth.

For those naturally inclined individuals like me, who want to support Mother Nature’s route, we caneat certain foods to prevent collagen from deteriorating by providing essential nutrients to support collagen production, as well as consume high collagen rich foods.

Essential nutrients needed for collagen production include:

– Lysine is an amino acid that promotes the formation of both collagen and muscle protein. It also acts as an anti viral and is needed for hormone production and the growth and maintenance of bones. Lysine rich foods include cheese, eggs, fish, lima beans, milk, potatoes, red meat, soy products, and yeast.

– Proline is an amino acid needed for the production of collagen and cartilage. It is essential to the development and maintenance of healthy skin and connective tissues. Egg whites are a rich source but the richest source is gelatine powder.

– Vitamin C plays an essential role in the maintenance of a normal mature collagen network by preventing the auto-inactivation of lysyl and prolyl hyroxylase, two key enzymes in collagen biosynthesis. Vitamin C is found naturally in Gubinge fruit or kakadu plum, citrus, rosehips, cherries and kiwi fruit.

– Zinc is also essential in the production of collagen. Oysters are the richest source. Pastured chickens, eggs and meat are second to oysters.

– Vitamin E works synergistically with vitamin C to stimulate collagen formation. Vitamin E is found in wheatgerm oil and nuts and seeds.

Foods rich in collagen:

– The stuff that makes jelly, is the richest source of collagen. Choose unsweetened and additive free collagen powder that comes from healthy pastured animals. Brands like Great lakes and Jensen are excellent. Make delicious fresh fruit, sugar free jellies, panacottas or delicious natural treats like gummy bears.

– Collagen hydrolysate by Great lakes. “Hydrolyzed Collagen is unique in its amino acid structure because of its high amounts of glycine, lysine and proline, which are found in lower amounts in other protein food supplements. These particular amino acids are found to generate cell growth much quicker because the natural ability to produce supporting amounts of connective tissue diminishes after the age of 25. Hydrolyzed Collagen is easily digested because of its low molecular weight and is absorbed within 30 minutes. All of the amino acids collectively are beneficial to cell reproduction, but it is the distinctive spectrum of this product that impacts the metabolic pathways to healthy tissue”. Collagen hydrosylate won’t gel like regular gelatine, but it dissolves easily in cold drinks and hot drinks.

– Broth and soups made from bone stock. Bones that yield the most gelatine are those with plenty of skin, cartilage and tendons. You will know you have plenty of collagen in your stock when it sets like a wobbly gelatinous jelly in your fridge.

It goes with out saying that addressing and balancing day-to-day lifestyle factors, that contribute to the ageing process, go a long way in looking after our collagen – balance stress, eliminate smoking, and minimize sun damage and the consumption of sugar and other processed foods and additives.

Skin Care Tips For Men

Laser Smooth Company_About Us

Caring for your skin is not just for women. In fact it is important for you health not just for aesthetic reasons. Taking care of the largest organ on your body is important. Here are a few tips to do so.

Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen. It’s the mantra of dermatologists everywhere, and for good reason. Dr. Ashvin Garlapati, of the Dermatology Center of Northwest Indiana, echoes this refrain. Sunscreen is “the most important product that any man can use to prevent aging and also help prevent skin cancer.” And if you’re going to invest in just one skincare product, that’s the most important one.

While skincare products are so widely marketing to women, there are helpful products out there for men. A good routine, as prescribed by Garlapati and other dermatologists, should take into account the differences in men’s skin as compared to women’s: thicker skin due to increased testosterone activity, more collagen (which supports the structure of your skin), and sebaceous (oil) glands, which make men more prone to clogged pores and blackheads. Men also tend to shave facial hair, which makes skin coarser.

These skin qualities should be taken into consideration when selecting a product. Be sure to include the following in your skincare routine.

If You Shave

Men who shave can develop razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Garlapati advises those with skin made sensitive by shaving to use an emollient-based shaving cream to soften the hair-bearing areas on the face. You’ll get a less irritating and more even shave.

When You Wash

Garlapati also advises washing your face with a gentle cleanser and not a regular bar soap. Harsh cleansers can strip the skin of natural oils, which can lead to drier and more sensitive skin.

Add an Exfoliant

Exfoliate regularly to take care of thick skin and help combat clogged pores. You can use a daily cleanser that contains an exfoliating product such as salicylic acid to remove dead skin cells and accumulated debris from the face.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated And Glowing This Summer!

Laser Smooth Company_Tips_Keep_Body_Cool_Skin_Glowing

Summer time is almost here and one of the most important things to do is stay hydrated as the weather heats up. Hydration also makes your skin and hair glow so it’s not just for heath reasons. Read a few things you can do to stay hydrated this summer.

Intake of enough water, seasonal fruits and fluids are the best, cheapest and easiest way to keep glowing skin and gorgeous looking hair during summer. But there is a host of other remedies as well to keep you cool — in looks and in spirits!

Drinking enough water is very important for the skin and hair. In fact, the major constituent of blood is water. It is the fluidity of blood that helps in transporting nutrients, oxygen and even wastes in the body.

Hair is actually fed by the nutrients in the blood stream and the proper circulation of blood to the skin surface is important for skin health. Water stimulates the circulation of blood. It not only oxygenates the skin but keeps it hydrated and also regulates the skin’s natural balance.

Summer is the time for cool drinks, not only to replenish fluids but also to keep the body cool. This is also another way of meeting the body’s fluid requirement. Nimbu paani, the traditional fresh lime and water, is an ideal drink during the summer. You can add one teaspoon honey and a pinch of salt.

But if you suffer from any specific diseases like diabetes, you should take the advice of your doctor regarding the use of additives like salt, sugar or honey to cold drinks and fruit juices. Avoid aerated drinks. Drink fresh fruit juices instead.

Fruit juices should be freshly extracted and diluted with water. Herbal drinks, containing extracts of rose and khus can also be taken during summers, as these are natural coolants and have been used since the ancient times.

Also, add a little lemon juice to herbal drinks. Instead of a hot cup of tea, drink iced tea without milk, adding one teaspoon of honey, a little lemon juice and ice. Jal Jeera, taken with ice, is also a suitable summer drink.

Another great combination is lemon and mint. Crush mint leaves and allow it to stand in boiled hot water for an hour. When the water cools, add lemon juice and ice to make a refreshing drink. You may add a dash of honey and a pinch of salt and pepper.

For an added kick, rock salt or chaat masala can be added, instead of salt and pepper. Mint is very cooling and aids digestion. Watermelon is also a real thirst-quencher during summers. Extract the juice, add one or two small chunks of watermelon, lemon juice and crushed ice. One teaspoon rose water can be added for flavour.

As for solids, avoid heavy, spicy and fried food. Include clear soups, lassi, yogurt, fresh fruits, salads and sprouts in your daily diet. Fresh fruits and salads also contribute to the body’s requirement of water.

In fact, nature itself provides us with the fruits that are suitable for every season. Melons (kharbuja), watermelons (tarbooz), cucumber and (kaki) are ideal for summers. They contain more water and help in replenishing the water which the body loses through sweat.

Instead of having rich desserts, take yogurt with honey or fresh fruits. These are delicious alternatives to your sweet tooth. During summer, you can end your meal with lassi. This is not only cooling but helps in digestion as well.

The human constitution is such that 70 percent of our body is made up of water. The loss of water occurs daily and must also be replenished accordingly. We do this mainly by drinking water. This is more so during summer when the loss of fluids is greater.

That’s why we feel thirsty and take in more water and other fluids during summers. In the normal course, we should drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. This would meet the body’s water requirement and also keep the system flushed of toxins and wastes. Of course, the quantity of water intake increases during summer, to make-up the loss of fluids through perspiration.

As far as the appearance is concerned, this is bound to reflect on the skin and body. The skin will look clearer and fresher while such foods can help to lose excess weight and also maintain a slim figure. Most important of all it will make your feel better. Beauty is not just a matter of how you look, but also how you feel.

Protect Your Skin In The Sun

Laser Smooth Company_Protect_Your_Skine_From_The_Sun

This summer you probably have plans to go out and play in the sun, but be sure to protect you skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Ultraviolet light, a type of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun, is invisible to the human eye. It can cause different degrees of skin damage if there’s prolonged exposure without protection. This month is National Skin Awareness Month and people are encouraged to not only get their skin checked but also know how to prevent sun damage.

Exercising outdoors has many health benefits but it can also be dangerous if protective measures aren’t used. Unprotected sun exposure can lead to sunburn or a rash for those who are allergic. Skin cancer is the most serious result of too much sun exposure without protection. It affects people of all colors and races.

“Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and it is estimated that one person dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour,” stated the American Academy of Dermatology website.

Dr. Daniel Shurman is the group founder of the Pennsylvania Dermatology Partners which covers the counties of Bucks, Berks, Montgomery and Lehigh. Shurman is trained in Mohs surgery which is a specialized technique used to remove skin cancers. Shurman said many people develop skin cancers and that the rates of certain types are increasing.

“Non-melanoma skin cancer is by far the most common cancer out there and melanoma is on the rise. It’s the fastest increasing cancer that’s out there,” he said.

Shurman said what’s really concerning is that melanoma rates are increasing fast in young people between the ages of 20 and 40. He said the cause of the rate increase is related to sun exposure and tanning. Shurman said people that want a tan should use a spray-on instead of sitting in the sun or a tanning bed.

“Getting tanned through sunlight or ultraviolet light increases your risk for skin cancer and melanoma. It’s highly recommended against by the American Academy of Dermatology,” he said.

To avoid tanning, it’s recommended that people exercise outdoors during the non-peak hours. Shurman said sun light rays are at their highest intensity between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. He said people that sweat a lot or will be directly in the sun should try to exercise outdoors either before or after those hours.

If you are going to be outside during those peak hours then clothing is the first line of defense against ultraviolet rays, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants help protect the skin against the sun. The darker the clothing also increases the UPF which stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. Your head also needs to be protected so it’s a good idea to wear a hat when you’ll be outside for a while.

“I think protective clothing is the ultimate way to go,” Shurman said

Protective clothing is also a good idea when exercising in the sun because sunscreen doesn’t work effectively when a person sweats or gets wet. If someone is swimming outdoors or sweating in the sunlight, then sunscreen should be reapplied every 40 minutes.

“There’s no such thing as waterproof sunscreen,” Shurman said. “That word should be removed from any advertising.”

People may not be aware that there are actually two types of sunscreens. Shurman said physical sunscreens have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in them allowing them to work immediately. But most sunscreens are actually chemical-based and have to be absorbed into the skin. In this case, it’s not a good idea to put on the sunscreen right before you leave to exercise outside, Shurman said.

“It takes about 30 minutes for a chemical sunscreen to really be effective,” he said.

It’s recommended that people use a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Shurman said SPF 30 is efficient for most people and there isn’t usually a need to go higher than that.

“It’s just more about using the right amount and putting it on in the right amount of time before you work out,” he said.

Not only is it important to notice when you put on sunscreen but’s it’s also necessary to be aware of how much sunscreen you’re using. Shurman said people that are using sunscreen over their whole body should use about two ounces each application. He said a bottle will last for only about four applications if an individual is putting it over all their exposed skin areas each time. Sunscreens also need to be reapplied about every two hours and even sooner if the skin gets wet.

When it comes to how often to use sunscreen on a regular basis, Shurman said that really depends on the individual. People that have more sun damage or are outside for longer periods of time are advised to wear more protection.

“The more fair-skinned you are, the more aggressive you should be with sunscreen,” he said.

5 Mistakes To Avoid When Getting Laser Treatment

Laser smooth company_Mistakes to avoid

So you’ve decided to get laser treatment. Awesome! Be sure to avoid these common mistakes however, and you will save yourself both time and money. Here are some mistakes other people have made that you should avoid.

1. You didn’t shave first. Lasers heat hair to damage the stem cells in hair follicles, but if the hair is too long, the laser can burn your skin. That’s why “you want hair in the follicle but not above the skin,” says Frank. “Freshly shaved is the best for treatment.” If you can’t resist waxing, allow hair to grow in for at least one week before a laser appointment. And although it takes several months for full laser hair removal, you can also shave in between visits.

2. You didn’t go to someone with experience. This may be as obvious as saying don’t use kitchen shears to trim your bangs, but it’s hard to know how versed someone is with a laser unless you ask. Whether it’s a physician, laser technician, or aesthetician, you want to make sure the person does hair removal regularly—every day versus once or twice a month, says Frank.

3. You didn’t check the device. Cool gel, tinted goggles, flashing light—turns out my first laser experience was with IPL. “If you’re going to a spa environment, generally you’re going to get less advanced technology,” says Frank. “IPL can work well; it just usually takes more treatments. And you can have some slightly higher risk of burns.” That’s because IPL is contraindicated for darker skin tones, including tans. For those individuals, Frank recommends seeing a physician, who can use a more appropriate device. For my second attempt at hair removal, Frank is using a diode laser. It hurts like a stinging, burning emmer effer, but it’s also over in seconds and is way more effective than IPL.

4. You’re not being consistent. The standard time between appointments is four to six weeks. And it usually takes five sessions to achieve satisfactory hair reduction. “What happens is people will get two or three [treatments], and then six months later they come back and say it all grew back. You have to repetitively traumatize the follicle,” says Frank. Certain areas with especially thick hair may require additional sessions, but five should be enough for most.

5. You have crazy-high expectations. Most areas will have about an 85 to 90 percent reduction in hair. Different areas will show different results for different people, but there will likely always still be some hair, so don’t expect complete baldness. The FDA approval is for permanent laser hair reduction, not removal.

  • We advise the use of sunscreen for the next 48 hours.
  • Immediate and continuous sun exposure, tanning, or working under halogen lights is to be avoided.
  • Remember, immediate redness (erythema) is to be expected and generally goes away in a few minutes or hours. Important to note, it is generally considered a desirable side effect because it evidences effective damage to the follicles. However, as erythema presents itself as redness to the treated area, most people prefer to schedule appoints for treatment of the face or other visible areas on a Friday or over the weekend so that normal skin tone returns before the start of a new week.
