Learn How Laser Hair Removal Works

The Light Sheer Duet Laser uses a process called Selective Photothermalysis or target destruction. This involves raising the temperature of the target high enough to damage the viable hair cells without damaging the epidermis and the surrounding tissues. Following follicular destruction, the debris of these cells will shed out and will fill with dermal fibers after approximately 1 month. Because each individual hair cell on the body can be found in a different stage of growth (anagen, catagen, or telogen), the process of permanent hair reduction can take between 4 to 8 treatments spread out over 4 to 6 weeks between each treatment.

Pre-Treatment Care Checklist

Laser Smooth Company_laser hair removal posttreatment

If you have a an appointment for laser hair removal, there are a few pre-treatment steps we ask you take for optimal results.

Pre Treatment Care

  • Please give a close shave to the areas receiving treatment the morning of your appointment. For harder to reach places, such as the backside, we can provide assistance just prior to application of our laser.
  • The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned and left free from any make-up, perfumes, lotions, creams, and/or antiperspirants.
  • Areas to be treated should be as light as possible, so avoid tanning 2 weeks leading up to treatments. Also, avoid sunless tanning products leading up to your appointments.
  • Do not wax or otherwise remove the roots of the hair follicles 3 weeks prior to receiving laser hair removal. Studies suggest, however, that waxing 3 weeks prior to an appointment may increase overall efficacy – as every treated hair is now in its active state of growth.
  • Do not bleach any hair to be treated, or lighten its color.
  • You must advise us of any medications you’re currently taking or have taken in the past 6 months which increases sensitivity to light. Examples include several antibiotic and antifungal medications as well as isotretinoin.

Does Laser Hair Removal Really Work??

Laser Smooth Company_Everything_You_Wanted_To_know

Summer is fast approaching! Tired of dealing with shaving and waxing away areas of unwanted hair during the summer months? But those days behind you with the power of laser hair removal! If you’re still skeptical about if laser hair removal “really” works, keep reading here:

As the owner of Grace Medical Aesthetics, one of the most common questions I hear is “Does laser hair removal really work?” And to that, I reply an emphatic yes! Advancements to laser hair removal devices have improved outcomes and decreased the cost significantly. Never has laser hair removal been easier or more affordable.

Laser hair removal is a beauty treatment that is increasingly popular among men and women of all ages. The ease of not ever having to shave is an appealing option to many too busy to do so. Laser hair removal can also be a life-improving option for those who struggle with ingrown hairs, embarrassing facial hair and discomfort due to hair growth. While I am hesitant to say that laser hair removal is completely permanent, what I can say is that it will cause a permanent reduction in hair growth. Different stages of life such as pregnancy and menopause can stimulate new hair growth despite laser hair removal.

Hair growth occurs in three cycles – the anagen (active growth phase), the catagen (shedding phase) and the telogen (dormant phase). The optimal time for laser hair removal is the anagen phase, simply because the hair is anchored in the follicle. The treatment uses a laser to target the pigment in the hair, heating the hair follicle enough to damage its ability to grow new hair. Because the laser is only able to damage the hair follicle when it is in the anagen (growth) phase – and these hair cycles vary depending on the area, it is important to maintain a schedule for laser hair removal. Most areas will rotate through the anagen phase every 4-8 weeks, so monthly or every other month treatment is optimal. It is also important to avoid the sun in the areas being treated because the laser cannot determine the difference between hair pigment and skin pigment – so the lighter the skin and the darker the hair, the better.

“I love this place.  I bought a groupon and thought I would try under my arms and after 5 treatments I don’t shave anymore!!! I use to shave in the morning and that evening it didn’t look like I shaved!!!  I am now purchasing for other area and love it.  Kim makes you feel at ease and is great.  Wouldn’t go anywhere else.” -Kami A., Cascade Locks, OR

5 Star Yelp Review: 10/21/2014
“I got my back done by Kim at Laser Smooth.  She’s extremely professional and the office is clean.  She was very patient and reviewed any concerns I might have prior to treatment. The treatments were not painful.  After about four sessions the hair has not grown back. I maybe get a little “peach fuzz” but you can’t see it. People think I’m naturally smooth.  I highly recommend and her rates are affordable.  Chris” -C D., Steamboat Springs, CO

5 Star Yelp Review: 1/13/2015
“Kim is absolutely AMAZING. She’s the reason I just created a Yelp account. I had my first session with her  today. Brazilian and underarms. She is SO sweet and patient and will happily answer any question you have and she even fully explained the equipment to me when I asked how it worked. She made me feel so comfortable and the price is so reasonable (in fact its a steal for how great of an experience you’ll get). The office is kind of far from where I live, but the bit of travel is beyond worth it. Look no further. Kim is the woman you’re looking for if you want a fast, thorough, easy, laser hair removal experience.” -Ariana K., Walnut Creek, CA

6 Things to Know About Laser Hair Removal

Laser smooth company_laser_hair_removal_facts

Before you receive laser hair removal treatment, we think it is important that you know everything you need to about the laser hair removal procedure.  Knowing how laser hair removal works, and being familiar with the treatment procedures will make your treatment experience with us positive and comfortable. If you are considering laser hair removal before the summer months, here are 6 things to read up on regarding laser hair removal treatment:

1. Understand that it’s permanent

After undergoing any of the following treatments, understand that even if you choose not to continue laser removal after the first session, your hair will not be the same again. Make sure you’re 100% sure before actually going through with it. On a more positive note, rest assured that it’s better to go for permanent hair removal than continuously shaving the areas where you wish to not have hair. Shaving gives you unwanted razor bumps and ingrown hairs, especially since men have thicker and coarser hair, leaving you worse for the wear than when you started.

The procedure does not guarantee permanent hair removal. Some sections or individual follicles could be resistant to the treatment and may grow back again, though if it does, the hair is finer and lighter in color.

2. What areas/types of hair it works best on

Many men gripe about the following areas, which also happen to be the most common: chest and stomach, back, shoulders, and genital hair. Laser hair removal also works better on lighter skin with dark hair, because the laser has a harder time zapping the pigment out of blond or white hair. If you have darker skin, the Nd: YAG laser will respond best to your hair and skin color combination.

3. How to prep

It’s important to remember that laser hair removal is a medical procedure, and that it requires a significant training on the part of the professional, so make sure to check the credentials of both the doctor or technician before you have the procedure performed. Also, be aware that like any medical procedure, it carries some risks. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the most common side effects are skin irritation, which is more of an immediate and temporary reaction that can include redness, swelling, and temporary sensitivity or discomfort in the area that you had lasered. You could also experience pigment change, which the laser may lighten or darken the area, though this too is usually temporary. Those most at risk for a skin lightening affect are those with darker skin, especially if the technician set the laser at an incorrect level.

Very rarely can the procedure cause blistering, scarring, or other changes in the texture of the area treated. Other less common side effects are graying of the hair treated, and strangely, hair may begin to grow excessively in and around the area treated.

As for the actual skin prep, limit any plucking, waxing, and electrolysis six weeks before undergoing the treatment. It’s OK to continue shaving. The reason for this is the laser targets your roots, so if you’re using a hair removal method that rids the skin of hair follicles, the procedure will be less effective. Also make sure to avoid sun exposure for six weeks prior and after treatment. The sun can also make the laser less effective and complications or side effects more likely. If you’re interested in hair removal for the summer, you should start now or wait until after the summer to start the procedure.

4. What happens during the procedure

Depending upon the size of the area and how many areas you’re having treated, it can take up to 30 minutes or slightly longer. Most likely the technician will have you lie down depending upon the area and will rub a gel over the area enabling the laser to move around easier. You will also be asked to wear the appropriate eyewear by the technician or doctor. Just to note: When you’re researching the procedure, look for a spa or doctor that uses Pain Free, Hair Free by Alma Lasers, which is very effective and virtually pain free. Before the laser touches your skin, the equipment will be adjusted according to the color, location, and thickness of the hair being treated.

The laser can treat approximately the size of a quarter every second, and each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second, treating many hairs at once. Larger areas like legs or back can take up to an hour to be treated.

5. The cost of the procedure

Generally speaking, the smaller the area treated, the lower the cost, while larger areas like the back or chest cost more. When considering the procedure and cost, know that the length of treatment varies and some patients can require anywhere from four to six sessions, and maybe even more to permanently reduce hair growth. Some salons may offer special priced packages if you purchase several sessions at once, which can end up saving you a lot of money.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost for laser hair removal treatments is $235 per session, though it can range from $150 to $500 a session depending on the area treated. However, the cost for treating a larger area like the back, can average from $600 to $900 per session, with the chest running you from $350 to $600. Though the cost of treatments can be high, it may actually be more cost effective than continuously waxing for the rest of your life, especially since laser removal can take a year or so to rid your body of hair for good. There may also be financing available for laser hair removal depending upon where you go for the procedure.

Groupon has special deals on laser hair removal treatment packages, just make sure to check with your place of choice and ask as many questions as necessary before booking an appointment.

6. Results and maintenance

Most importantly, make sure you’re consistent so that you see results. Most patients can see permanent results after an average of three to seven sessions. Yearly maintenance may be necessary to make sure the results remain intact, as hair can technically grow back slightly, but will not reappear as before.

Laser Hair Removal Works Great For Men!

Laser Smooth Company_Waxing_vs_laser

Women and men both spend time throughout the week removing unwanted hair. While women often seek laser hair removal treatment to remove unwanted hair in the armpit, legs, or upper lips, laser hair removal is also a great option for men who have areas of unwanted hair! While the cost of laser hair removal treatment is more than a new razor or a round of waxing treatment, the cost of repeated hair removal, like waxing and shaving, can add up over the years! Read about men utilizing laser hair removal here:

Kim Kardashian may believe that waxing away unwanted hair is the best solution for hubby Kanye West, who is reported to spend up to two hours a week getting hair pulled off. The area only stays smooth for a short time, then the hair begins to grow back.

Typically Kim Kardashian is a trend-setter, but in this case Kardashian is actually bucking the preferred route by men who want to eliminate unwanted hair: laser hair removal.

In fact, studies show that laser hair removal is the top choice of men who want hair gone and want it gone forever or at least for a really, really long time.

Max Smith, 30, a single Clearwater, Fla. finance executive, works hard and likes to play hard. On weekends, he often heads to the beach. Though he spends an hour a day at the gym each morning and has washboard abs, he says he was reluctant to remove his shirt at the beach because his back was filled with hair from top to bottom.

“I’d gone the waxing route. I’ve tried Nair. I’ve used a razor. But it was never-ending and it was very itchy after a couple weeks when the hair began to grow back… and I often got ingrown hairs,” says Smith. “I really wanted the hair gone but it just kept growing back.”

Smith had heard about laser hair removal for women while watching a late night infomercial on TV, but he didn’t know whether laser hair removal for men was even an option.

After all, laser hair removal was not exactly a topic of conversation at the gym or at the office. So he did the next best thing.

Laser hair removal for men: Quest for smooth skin

“I researched online, searching for ‘laser hair removal men’ and ‘laser hair removal Clearwater’ and finally found Health and Med Spa,” says Smith. “I’m in the third month of treatment for my back hair removal and it’s made a huge difference. Now I am comfortable losing my shirt at Clearwater Beach or at the pool.”

Depending on the body part, six monthly treatments is what’s required to rid the area of unwanted body hair, says Irina Peters, spa director at Health and Medspa in Clearwater, where Smith is a client.

“We still do more laser hair removal for women, but many men are coming in to remove hair on their backs, shoulders and necks,” says Peters. “It makes them feel so much more confident. Some men do it for the significant other in their lives, but the bulk of the men tell me they are doing laser hair removal for themselves.”

5 Star Yelp Review: 7/24/2015
“Kim put me at ease straight away.  She is a very personable, patient and thorough (she asks about medications and sun exposure every time) technician.  I bought two Groupons  and am 2/3 of the way through my treatments.  The difference is amazing and it is great to travel over 2 days away from home and not have to worry about finding good light and privacy to tweeze!” -Caroline K., Gresham, OR

5 Star Yelp Review: 8/11/2015
“Today I went in for a free consultation. Kim was super friendly, easy going, and put me at ease. She explained the two laser options she had and treated one of my armpits so I could feel what the laser was like as well as see the difference between my two armpits in two weeks. The location was very discreet. I liked that the majority of the building was an urgent care and the building felt like a professional clinic, so I wouldn’t be as embarrassed if someone I knew saw me walking in the doors of the place.

I’m going to wait two weeks to see the difference between the area treated by Kim and the area untreated. I’m being completely serious, the laser did not hurt! The one she tried on me had a fairly large head (like the size of a dog tag) that had a vacuuming and warming sensation on my skin. It took less than 10 pulses on my armpit to be complete, and definitely less than 5 minutes. The only part that could be scary for some people is the fact that you can’t see what’s happening because you’re required to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the light. One other potential downside (and this is generally for laser hair removal, not specific to Laser Smooth) is that 6 treatment would take 9 months to complete the area! That’s quite a commitment when you’re not supposed to use any other type of hair removal on the area. Thank goodness it’s at the end of summer…

Later today I went to another laser hair removal place, just to compare. They had a doctor on staff and an RN did all of the treatments. However, the RN did not make me feel welcome, the cost would be 3x what Kim quoted me, and if anything I felt like she wanted to get me out the door. It did not feel personalized and she did not try her two laser options on me. By the way, the one she said she’d use was the smaller of the two types Kim had. It supposedly was cool against the skin and felt like a rubberband. The tip was the size of a toothbrush head.

Anyways… I hope this information is useful to someone considering laser hair removal!” -Kate A., Richmond, VA
