Post Treatment Care after Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_laser hair removal post treatment

After your laser hair removal treatment at Laser Smooth Company, there are a few post treatment care steps recommended for our clients to make their laser hair removal experience as successful and as comfortable as possible.

To obtain the highest level of efficacy, it’s important to take a moment to review these post treatment considerations. By printing this list, you’ll have a comprehensive check-list for remembering these essential guidelines to make the most of your laser hair removal appointment. In addition, we’ll review these at the time of making your appointment and answer any questions you may have. By doing so, we’re able to provide the highest level of care while guaranteeing the best results.

Post Treatment Care

  • We will apply a soothing aloe and vitamin E lotion to treated areas.
  • There is no downtime with laser hair removal, so you can immediately engage in normal activities following your appointment.
  • We advise the use of sunscreen for the next 48 hours.
  • Immediate and continuous sun exposure, tanning, or working under halogen lights is to be avoided.
  • Remember, immediate redness (erythema) is to be expected and generally goes away in a few minutes or hours. Important to note, it is generally considered a desirable side effect because it evidences effective damage to the follicles. However, as erythema presents itself as redness to the treated area, most people prefer to schedule appoints for treatment of the face or other visible areas on a Friday or over the weekend so that normal skin tone returns before the start of a new week

Pre Treatment Care for Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Laser Smooth Company_laser hair removal pretreatment

We want your experience with laser hair removal to be as successful as possible! While we promise exceptional laser hair removal treatment in our clinic, we encourage our clients to take these pre-treatment steps to make their results with laser hair removal successful:

To obtain the highest level of efficacy, it’s important to take a moment to review these pre treatment considerations.

Pre Treatment Care

  • Please give a close shave to the areas receiving treatment the morning of your appointment. For harder to reach places, such as the backside, we can provide assistance just prior to application of our laser.
  • The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned and left free from any make-up, perfumes, lotions, creams, and/or antiperspirants.
  • Areas to be treated should be as light as possible, so avoid tanning 2 weeks leading up to treatments. Also, avoid sunless tanning products leading up to your appointments.
  • Do not wax or otherwise remove the roots of the hair follicles 3 weeks prior to receiving laser hair removal. Studies suggest, however, that waxing 3 weeks prior to an appointment may increase overall efficacy – as every treated hair is now in its active state of growth.
  • Do not bleach any hair to be treated, or lighten its color.
  • You must advise us of any medications you’re currently taking or have taken in the past 6 months which increases sensitivity to light. Examples include several antibiotic and antifungal medications as well as isotretinoin.

Laser Hair Removal and Your Heathl

Laser Smooth Company_Laser_hair_removal_health

Many people who are reluctant to sign up for laser hair removal treatment are concerned about potential health risks from the light energy exposure during laser hair removal treatment. If you are holding off on laser hair removal because of concerns about the safety of the treatment, don’t wait any longer! Keep reading here and read about how laser hair removal is a procedure that is completely safe regarding your exposure to the light energy from the laser:

We got this question from a viewer:

Dear Dr. Manny,
I have my honeymoon coming up and I’ve been thinking about getting laser hair removal for my bikini line, but I’m a little worried about the radiation that’s involved with it. Is there any kind of link between laser hair removal and cancer?
Thanks,
Annie

In terms of cancer risk, X-rays and gamma rays are the most dangerous and are known as high-frequency ionizing radiation. Although both types can come from natural sources like radon gas, they can also be manmade. For example, nuclear power plants create this type of radiation for nuclear energy, and medical imaging tests like CT scans use X-rays to produce pictures of areas inside the body.

When ionizing radiation passes through the body it can cause direct damage to a cell’s DNA and potentially lead to cancer later on.

As powerful as ionizing radiation is, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states the laser energy in hair removal procedures use non-ionizing radiation.

“The light energy from these lasers actually remains superficially, it remains at the level of the skin,” Dr. Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist in New York City told FoxNews.com. “These lasers don’t cause DNA damage and they don’t cause DNA mutations.”

The pulses of light energy used in laser hair removal treatments are only designed to heat and destroy hair follicles. Although some women continue to be concerned about treating areas near their reproductive organs, experts say there is no additional risk.

“The light used does not penetrate beyond the depths of the hair follicle and internal organs are in no way affected, nor is fertility,” Dr. Konstantin Zakashansky, a gynecologic oncologist at The Mount Sinai Hospital told FoxNews.com.

As of now, no research has showed the light energy from hair removal lasers can cause cancer. But there are some risks involved like redness, scarring and discoloration in the treated area, Bowe said.

If a patient experiences some irritation after a laser session, several remedies can help soothe the treated area.

“Icing the area immediately following treatment is key– cold milk compresses are amazingly soothing,” Bowe said. “Popping an Aleve or ibuprofen can decrease swelling and redness, but avoid Tylenol. If the redness lasts for longer than a few hours, be sure to tell your doctor so they can be more conservative with the settings at your next session.”

On average, it can take about six sessions to achieve lasting results, but Bowe encourages her patients to come in for touch-ups every two years for those stubborn strays that manage to survive or grow back over time.

For people looking to stick with more traditional hair removal methods, Bowe recommends shaving.

“If laser treatments are too pricey, or the hair is not dark brown or black (and therefore not a good candidate for laser treatments), then go for shaving over waxing. Waxing has the highest risk of causing in-grown hairs that can be painful and even get infected with MRSA,” she said.

Men are Great Candidates For Laser Hair Removal!

Laser Smooth Company_Mens hair removal

While it seems like the laser hair removal market is dominated by women, many men are excellent candidates for laser hair removal! Laser hair removal is a treatment that is meant to be utilized by all. Read this account of by the style and grooming editor of Men’s Fitness, Barret Wertz, and his experience with the laser hair removal process:

I’m not a particularly hairy guy. Some here to trim, some there to shave, but over all, I’m pretty standard in the hair department. Except for one area: the back of my neck. It’s basically full bush seven days post-haircut. I know you guys can feel me on this. Luckily, being Men’s Fitness‘ Style and Grooming Editor means I’m inundated with information about the newest and coolest grooming innovations.

So, I have tried seemingly every method there is to tame my neck hair from shaving to waxing, and even depilatory cream. Up until recently, I thought anything more serious would require time, pain, and a lot cash. But when I heard about the newest incarnation of laser hair removal, I had to try it myself, tackling my neck-bush with a little more gusto than I have in the past.

I met with the renowned Dr. Tina West of the West Institute outside Washington D.C. to explore my hair removal options. First and foremost, I learned that it is not actually hair removal, it is reduction. It’s not a cure-all for any excess hair I may have. I will never be able to just forget I have neck hair. But, I would see a huge improvement, I was told. I might even be able to avoid special neck-hair-only shaves at the barber.

So it was time to get to it. I assumed there would be numbing creams and robes and a lot of discomfort. Not so. Dr. West used the brand new LightSheer Duet for the procedure. The LightSheer Duet is a state of the art laser used for hair reduction. It allows for large treatment spot size and it’s up to five times the speed of earlier laser hair reduction technology.

“Men are oftentimes seeking lunchtime treatments that are now possible with more efficient laser hair reduction that is fast and painless, without the extra time previously required for numbing creams,” says Dr. West. “The big advantage of laser hair reduction compared to other methods of hair removal is that the laser is the only technology that changes the way the hair grows back, causing it to grow back finer and more slowly.”

First, Dr. West took a look at my neck to determine how good of a candidate I would be. Turns out, laser hair treatments work best on fair skin and dark hair. That’s because the less melanin and the more pigment in your skin, the better the laser will work.  Does that mean it’s not worth trying if you have a summer glow? No, but it does mean it may be best to wait until the cooler months so you can get a few treatments done before swimsuit season circles back. This also means you should tackle this while in your younger years as gray or white hair does not respond to the laser. I am fair skinned with light brown hair (and maybe a few grays, I’m not embarrassed), meaning I should be a good candidate.

So there I sat, patiently waiting what I was expecting to take at least an hour, maybe two. Where was the robe I was to change into? When do I get a towel to bite down on while they shoot laser beams into my neck? Should I expect a a week of recovery time? More!? Well in reality, it was so quick. From start to finish (aside from me being extra inquisitive due to the fact that I was going to be writing this up) it was 20 minutes. Assume about 45 minutes to an hour for the entire back. (I will talk a little later how much easier that will be soon!)

The pain was minimal. It just felt like a slightly warm shock. It was more of a nuisance than actual pain, though it was uncomfortable for a couple days afterwards. The closest thing I can relate it to is a sunburn. Two days of using the sample Dr. West gave me of Eau Thermal Avene Cicalfate POST-PROCEDURE and making sure to use a LOT of sunscreen (which is a no-brainer) I was pretty much good-to-go.

So, I was done! One treatment is it, right? Nope. Not at all. Traditional laser hair treatments typically take six or so treatments to achieve the desired results, with the occasional follow-up treatments following when desired. This is because not all your hair grows in at once. Some hairs are in the growth phase, while others are in the dormant phase. Hairs in the dormant phase, much like white hairs, will not respond to the treatment. So, you have to head back, ideally in about six weeks, to hit those guys once they have started growing. The new LightSheer is actually more powerful than it’s predecessors and can cut the number of times required for expected results in half. So, that’s three sessions instead of six.

Now, like I mentioned earlier, the future of laser-assisted hair reduction for men is advancing, and fast. Lumenis (the company that created LightSheer) is introducing the LightSheer Infinity which has a larger spot size for even faster treatment. That means, those of you with hairy backs can rejoice—it will be even easier to deal with areas that big.

Growth in the hair removal market has relatively stabilized in women, but men are predicted to continue to be a growth segment due to advancing technologies and increased consumer awareness. As of 2013 it was the second-most popular minimally-invasive procedure behind Botox.  Personally, I’m shocked more guys are getting Botox than laser hair removal.

So to wrap up, if you’ve never considered laser hair reduction an option, it may be time to think again. Stop fighting back the tears while Helga rips out your hair with antiquated wax and strips. Laser hair reduction, especially with the new, high powered LightSheer laser, is the way to go.

FAQ’s About Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Laser Smooth Company_What is Laser Hair Removal

While most people have probably heard of laser hair removal, few people know how laser hair removal actually works. If you’ve been considering laser hair removal, but would like to learn more about it before you sign up for treatment check out our frequently asked questions here:

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a hair removal procedure that has been practiced since 1997. It is a procedure which is performed by a specially-trained laser specialist or doctor, and is conducted by pointing a long pulse laser at a region of desired hair removal. The ultimate result of laser hair removal is disabling hair follicles from producing hair, resulting in permanent hair removal. Since hair grows in cycles, to completely eliminate hair growth, 6-8 treatments (at intervals of 8-12 weeks) are needed to achieve the desired result.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The success of laser hair removal depends upon a number of variables, such as hair and skin pigmentation, as well as coarseness of hair. Lasers used for permanent hair removal emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigments in hair. If the hair is coarse, or if the surrounding skin is lighter than the pigment of the hair, the pigment in the hair will better absorb the heat from the laser, thereby destroying the hair follicle. In order to prevent burning of the surrounding skin during laser treatments, the laser produces a narrow bandwidth, which concentrates the laser on the hair. Although, when a laser beam is emitted, heat is transferred from the hair to the surrounding skin for several milliseconds after the pulse. Because of this, some lasers have cooling attachments to surround the skin, which help to absorb heat that is transmitted to the skin during a laser treatment.

Is laser hair removal for men?

Men and women utilize laser treatment for permanent hair removal.
