Best Moisturizers For Your Skin

Laser Smooth Company_Best_Moisturizers

Keeping your skin hydrated is important not only after a laser hair removal treatment but during all times of year. Just as people have different hair colors and skin tones, people have different types of skin as well. Whether you have oily, sensitive, or dry skin, here is a list of moisturizes for every skin type that all cost less than $20!

We all know we need moisturizer. The confusing part? Picking one that works for your skin—and your budget. Well, here’s your cheat sheet: Using the Allure Beauty Product Finder, we found the ten best drugstore moisturizers for every skin type, all for under $20. So whether your skin is dry, acne-prone, or you’ve got dark spots or fine lines, we’ve got you—and your wallet—covered.

BASIC DAYTIME

CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM is a hydrating powerhouse: It contains ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid to draw in moisture, strengthening and plumping skin, plus SPF 30 to protect it from the sun. Yet it still feels light and silky, and it won’t clog your pores.

BASIC NIGHTTIME

There’s a reason your mother, your grandmother, your aunt, and probably your next-door neighbor all trust Olay: The stuff works. With a peptide-B3 complex, niacinamide, and powerful antioxidants like vitamin E and green-tea extract, Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Creamcovers the 3 R’s: It replenishes, repairs, and renews. Slather some on before bed every night and by morning your skin will feel velvety and your fine lines…wait, where’d they go?

TINTED

Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB Sunscreensmooths over minor imperfections, giving you an even complexion without that makeup-y look. Plus, it offers ample sun protection with SPF 30 and costs less than ten bucks.

ANTI-AGING

Short of Botox, nothing’s better at smoothing fine lines and wrinkles than retinol. And for less than $20, nothing beats RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream. The dose of pure, stabilized retinol in this Best of Beauty winner stimulates collagen production and faster cell turnover. The result? Firmer, healthier, more glowing skin. Just be sure to use a moisturizer containing a high SPF during the day since retinol makes your skin more sun-sensitive.

FOR OILY/ ACNE-PRONE SKIN

If you’re among the acne-prone who have used harsh ingredients and wound up with skin that’s even more irritated, try killing zits with kindness:Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions Daily Moisturizing Lotion treats acne by gently unclogging pores with 1 percent salicylic acid and soothing skin with witch hazel and hops.

FOR DRY SKIN

If you’re like me, you’d find the idea of putting oil on your face both ridiculous and somewhat horrifying—and you can admit when you’re wrong. Mea culpa: Face oils not only nourish dry skin, some can actually balance oily or acne-prone skin. (I know: Who’da thunk it?) If you’re still not convinced, start small. Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil to Go comes in a .5 oz “to go” vial for $14 (and since you only need a few drops, even this size will last you a while).

FOR SENSITIVE/ IRRITATED SKIN

Sometimes, basic is better. Case in point: If your skin is sensitive or inflamed, you don’t want any ingredients that could make matters worse. Simple Vital Vitamin Day Cream babies your face with natural ingredients like vitamins B5 and E, glycerin, and skin-soothing bisabolol. It’s also free of dyes, artificial perfumes, and other potential irritants.

FOR BRIGHTENING

Load up on skin-brightening vitamin C with Garnier Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Corrector and say buh-bye to dull, tired, splotchy skin. ThisReaders’ Choice Breakthrough winner lightens spots, evens skin tone, and delivers a radiant complexion. And, because vitamin C promotes collagen production, you may notice firmer skin and fewer lines, too.

WITH SUNSCREEN

Want to protect against wrinkles, sun spots, and premature aging? Use a powerful sunscreen every day. Period. Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 50 feels light and doesn’t leave a white cast, despite its high SPF. Plus it makes skin feel soft—not greasy—and layers beautifully under makeup.

WITH SELF-TANNER

Everyone knows the only safe tan is a fake tan. Jergens Natural Glow Face Daily Moisturizer SPF 20 will have you bronzed and beautiful in a few days—without leaving behind any damage or weird streaks.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Curious about how laser hair removal works to permanently remove hair from any part of your body? Watch the video above to find out more!!

How it works

The Light Sheer Duet Laser uses a process called Selective Photothermalysis or target destruction. This involves raising the temperature of the target high enough to damage the viable hair cells without damaging the epidermis and the surrounding tissues. Following follicular destruction, the debris of these cells will shed out and will fill with dermal fibers after approximately 1 month. Because each individual hair cell on the body can be found in a different stage of growth (anagen, catagen, or telogen), the process of permanent hair reduction can take between 4 to 8 treatments spread out over 4 to 6 weeks between each treatment.

Pre Laser Hair Removal Treatment Care

Laser Smooth Company_laser hair removal pretreatment

In order to make your laser hair removal treatment as effective as possible, we have a pre-treatment care checklist for you to keep in mind before your treatment. While we can promise exceptional laser hair removal treatment at our office, steps you take before your treatment will make a difference in helping the effectiveness of your treatments:

Pre Treatment Care

  • Please give a close shave to the areas receiving treatment the morning of your appointment. For harder to reach places, such as the backside, we can provide assistance just prior to application of our laser.
  • The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned and left free from any make-up, perfumes, lotions, creams, and/or antiperspirants.
  • Areas to be treated should be as light as possible, so avoid tanning 2 weeks leading up to treatments. Also, avoid sunless tanning products leading up to your appointments.
  • Do not wax or otherwise remove the roots of the hair follicles 3 weeks prior to receiving laser hair removal. Studies suggest, however, that waxing 3 weeks prior to an appointment may increase overall efficacy – as every treated hair is now in its active state of growth.
  • Do not bleach any hair to be treated, or lighten its color.
  • You must advise us of any medications you’re currently taking or have taken in the past 6 months which increases sensitivity to light. Examples include several antibiotic and antifungal medications as well as isotretinoin.

If you have additional questions about this checklist, or if you are interested in scheduling an appointment, call us at 503.867.6386 or contact us here

What You Want to Know About Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_What_you_need_to_know

Laser hair removal is a new idea for many. And while commentary from individuals in the public eye, such as the Kardshian’s, is often times more than anyone wanted to know, we are happy to discuss any questions or wants you have regarding laser hair removal treatment! Find out more about laser hair removal with a Q & A here:

Khloé Kardashian caused a bit of an uproar recently when she shared the bikini-line preferences of herself and her sisters in a segment on her eponymous app. And it turns out that the women’s approaches to nether grooming are as different as the sisters themselves. While Khloé prefers a manicured landing strip (“I don’t like looking at an adult woman and seeing nothing down there” she said) and Kourtney Kardashian leans more toward the au naturel, it was what Khloé revealed about Kim Kardashian that really got us pondering hair removal options. “I know Kim is completely bare and now she says she wishes she still had a lil’ somethin’ going on but she lasered it all off,” said Khloé. “I’ll laser other places that the sun doesn’t shine. But I like that if I ever want to go bare, I can just shave it and change my mind later.”

Khloé’s thoughts on shaving versus laser resonate with many women who are ambivalent about never having hair grow again—or who just wonder what the process is all about. With this in mind, we reached out to Lisa Guidi, owner of N.Y.C. laser hair removal treatment facility Erase Spa to give us the lowdown on everything you need to know before getting laser hair removal.

How Does It Work?
The technology targets follicles with a focused laser beam that heats the pigment at the root of the hair and damages the bulb in the process, inhibiting its ability to grow hair. Your first step with each session will be to carefully shave the hair you want lasered. A technician will then run a hand-held device over your skin, zapping intense light energy into the shaved follicles with each pass.

Is It Actually Permanent?
“Once the follicle is dead, the hair doesn’t come back,” says Guidi. But keep in mind that laser hair removal is no quick fix. Guidi typically recommends between 8 and 14 sessions, which many practitioners space 4 to 8 weeks apart. “Each laser session affects the average amount of hair that’s in an active stage of human hair growth, which is 10- to 15-percent” she explains. And even after your full package of sessions, you might need to invest in a once-yearly touch up “just to get any little scraggly regrowth,” recommends Guidi.

Does It Hurt?
While laser hair removal isn’t pain free, many newer lasers are far less painful than devices of the past. The sensation can feel a bit like a rubber band snapping against the skin, and the discomfort is typically momentary, only hurting while the laser is actually zapping the hairs.

Who’s a Good Candidate?
Everything from hair color to skin color can affect how successful your laser hair removal will be. Many lasers don’t work on darker skin tones or on blonde or gray hair; people with light skin and dark hair typically have the best results. Be sure to ask your dermatologist whether the laser she uses is appropriate for your skin type and hair color before committing to the process.

Any Chance of Scars?
While scarring is very rare with laser hair removal, Guidi has one important caution: “We recommend that if you’re prone to keloiding to [ask] your dermatologist if laser hair removal is a good idea.”

Skip the Bikini-Line Trends
Because laser hair removal is permanent, think very hard about how you’re shaping the hair you leave behind and how much you’re eliminating, to avoid future regrets à la Kim K. Just like fashion and hairstyles, ideas about bikini lines shift with the times, so take a less-is-more approach unless you’re very confident that you want to be totally bare for the rest of your life.

5 Star Yelp Review: 10/21/2014
“I got my back done by Kim at Laser Smooth.  She’s extremely professional and the office is clean.  She was very patient and reviewed any concerns I might have prior to treatment. The treatments were not painful.  After about four sessions the hair has not grown back. I maybe get a little “peach fuzz” but you can’t see it. People think I’m naturally smooth.  I highly recommend and her rates are affordable.  Chris” -C D., Steamboat Springs, CO

5 Star Yelp Review: 1/13/2015
“Kim is absolutely AMAZING. She’s the reason I just created a Yelp account. I had my first session with her  today. Brazilian and underarms. She is SO sweet and patient and will happily answer any question you have and she even fully explained the equipment to me when I asked how it worked. She made me feel so comfortable and the price is so reasonable (in fact its a steal for how great of an experience you’ll get). The office is kind of far from where I live, but the bit of travel is beyond worth it. Look no further. Laser Hair Removal for Men: Better than Waxing/Shaving?

Laser Smooth Company_Laser Hair Removal for Men_Better than Waxing_Shaving

While women often the ones who seek laser hair removal for their upper lip, armpits, and legs, men often overlook themselves as excellent candidates for laser hair removal treatment. Men who shave or wax their chest or back often can find a permanent solution to their unwanted hair in laser hair removal. While the cost of laser hair removal treatment is more than a new razor or a round of waxing treatment, the costs of repeated hair removal methods, like waxing and shaving, can add up over the years! Read about men utilizing laser hair removal below:

Kim Kardashian may believe that waxing away unwanted hair is the best solution for hubby Kanye West, who is reported to spend up to two hours a week getting hair pulled off. The area only stays smooth for a short time, then the hair begins to grow back.

Typically Kim Kardashian is a trend-setter, but in this case Kardashian is actually bucking the preferred route by men who want to eliminate unwanted hair: laser hair removal.

In fact, studies show that laser hair removal is the top choice of men who want hair gone and want it gone forever or at least for a really, really long time.

Max Smith, 30, a single Clearwater, Fla. finance executive, works hard and likes to play hard. On weekends, he often heads to the beach. Though he spends an hour a day at the gym each morning and has washboard abs, he says he was reluctant to remove his shirt at the beach because his back was filled with hair from top to bottom.

“I’d gone the waxing route. I’ve tried Nair. I’ve used a razor. But it was never-ending and it was very itchy after a couple weeks when the hair began to grow back… and I often got ingrown hairs,” says Smith. “I really wanted the hair gone but it just kept growing back.”

Smith had heard about laser hair removal for women while watching a late night infomercial on TV, but he didn’t know whether laser hair removal for men was even an option.

After all, laser hair removal was not exactly a topic of conversation at the gym or at the office. So he did the next best thing.

Laser hair removal for men: Quest for smooth skin

“I researched online, searching for ‘laser hair removal men’ and ‘laser hair removal Clearwater’ and finally found Health and Med Spa,” says Smith. “I’m in the third month of treatment for my back hair removal and it’s made a huge difference. Now I am comfortable losing my shirt at Clearwater Beach or at the pool.”

Depending on the body part, six monthly treatments is what’s required to rid the area of unwanted body hair, says Irina Peters, spa director at Health and Medspa in Clearwater, where Smith is a client.

“We still do more laser hair removal for women, but many men are coming in to remove hair on their backs, shoulders and necks,” says Peters. “It makes them feel so much more confident. Some men do it for the significant other in their lives, but the bulk of the men tell me they are doing laser hair removal for themselves.”

How Laser Hair Removal Compares

Laser Smooth Company_Hair-removal_comparison

With so many hair removal options on the market today, we thought it would be interesting to see how they all compare. We found this breakdown of hair removal methods on the Washingtonian, written by Jennifer Barger. While laser hair removal is on the more expensive side (dependent upon the treatment area size and number of treatments needed), it certainly is a leader in effectiveness:

Hair Removal Legend

The Pain

The discomfort of hair removal is highly subjective—it varies according to pain tolerance, body part, and how thick and plentiful your hair is.

Hair removal icon: how painful the hair removal treatment is.

Waxing

Depending on how coarse your hair is and where it is, waxing can hurt a lot—you may feel as if your hair is being yanked out (which it is).

Hair removal icon: how painful the hair removal treatment is.

Electrolysis

While the technology has improved in recent years, using electricity to remove single hairs is generally more time-consuming and involves more discomfort than using lasers. Imagine an intense pinch and some heat.

Hair removal icon: how painful the hair removal treatment is.

Sugaring

Waxing’s gentler cousin, in which a warm sugar paste is used to pull hair from the roots. It’s less painful because sugar crystals adhere just to hairs, not to skin, which means less pulling and redness.

Hair removal icon: how painful the hair removal treatment is.

Laser

With sensations that range from pinpricks to slight burning, laser hair removal isn’t exactly comfortable, but many users report that it’s less intense than waxing.

Shaving

Unless you cut yourself or have extra-sensitive skin, shaving is minimally painful. The exception: Coarse-haired areas (bikini line, men’s faces) are prone to ingrown hairs and bumps.

Depilatories

Nair and other chemical hair-removal creams are smelly and messy but pain-free.

The Cost

Below are price quotes for one year of hair removal on the bikini line, but costs vary depending on products and practitioners. (Electrolysis is not included because it’s rarely used to remove all bikini-line hair.)

Laser

The Results

Hair-removal methods can last anywhere from forever to a few days. Here’s how long results last for various methods.

Electrolysis

Dubbed permanent hair removal by the FDA; but it targets only visible hairs, so it can require frequent treatments over time.

Waxing

Sugaring
