Covering Your Unanswered Questions About Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_Safe_and_effective

Laser hair removal is a procedure that many people still have questions about. These 10 questions, covering pain to medical limitations, are here to help answer any lingering questions you might have about laser hair removal treatments.

Does it hurt?
It hurts a bit and everyone has different pain tolerance. There are also other variables like the type of machine they are using (Stevee used Candela which is one of the best) and the area of the body you are having treated. One reader responded that it felt like an elastic snap. That was accurate for me. Another mentioned bacon/grease splatter. This was also accurate although thankful not within a centimeter of my eyeball. Our own Amber described the feeling as a sunburn but that was not my experience. If you have a low tolerance for pain but want to join the hairless, a numbing cream might get you through the ordeal. Be sure you tell your tech you applied it so they clean the area prior to treatment. Apply cream 30 mins before your appointment. No Scream Cream 1 oz. comes highly recommended.

Is there any recovery?
There was no recovery time for me. My technician suggested that I not exercise for the rest of the day (which was not a problem, ha) and that if I had any discomfort, Tylenol and ice would put that to rest. I did not experience any pain afterwards. Amber did have some sunburn-like pain which was soothed with Aloe Vera gel. Don’t take any pain meds that contain aspirin up to 24 hours before treatments. Tylenol is ok, but nothing that will thin your blood. ALWAYS tell your laser tech what meds and vitamins you are on as a lot of these can affect the sensitivity and thickness of your skin.

When should I begin treatment?
They recommend starting laser hair removal… in the Fall so that by the time the following Summer rolls around, treatments will be complete. Having a session and then going out in the sun will cause extreme sun damage like hypo (white spots) and hyper-pigmentation (brown spots). Your skin is extremely sensitive and vulnerable to the sun after a treatment, and treated areas should not be exposed to direct/prolonged sunlight for 3 weeks after treatment. Arm pits and bikini areas are ok to treat in the summer months (unless you’re a nudest), but if you’re going in for full leg hair removal and plan to hang out by the pool this summer, wait. Do not go out in the sun!!!!

More on the sun topic – be honest with your technician if you’ve been out in the sun prior to your appointment. If you’ve had a lot of sun exposure your skin is irritated, and actually can be thinner. The laser can burn you further which could lead to scabbing, scarring and hyper and hypo-pigmentation.

Does Laser Hair Removal always work?
Blonde hairs are almost impossible to get rid of – if the hair you want to get rid of is extremely light, gray or blonde (peach fuzzy), think twice about spending money on laser treatments. This goes back to lasers targeting dark pigments. Those lighter hairs also have lighter hair follicles, so the laser has a hard time picking them up and destroying them.

Is there anyone who should not get laser hair removal for medical reasons?
You should not get laser hair removal if you are pregnant or nursing. Also, do not schedule your treatments anywhere near the week of that time of the month. Treatments when your near or on your cycle are 10xs more painful. Your hormones are raging and your skin is actually more susceptible to being damaged by the laser.

How many treatments do you need to have?
Be realistic about your odds- hair on the legs, back and arms have a higher and faster success rate. These areas also usually end up requiring less treatments than facial hair, underarms and bikini areas. For women, the hair on our face, underarms and private areas are hormonally driven making those follicles extremely stubborn to get. So for those hormonally driven areas,  set realistic expectations – 6-8 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart and expect a 80-90% hair reduction and the possibility you will have to have a few touch ups in the years to come.

How long does Laser Hair Removal last?
The average lifespan of the treatment is 3 years before you will need touch-up treatment.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my treatment?
You will want the area to be clean and freshly shaven. If you have hair growth, the laser treatment won’t be as effective. Lasers target dark pigment, so if you have any dark stubble, the laser’s energy will be distributed to the surface and won’t reach the hair follicle to essentially destroy it (why laser hair removal works). Also, if you go unshaven, the whole room will smell like burnt hair (gross.) Your technician may suggest 1-2 days of growth depending on the machine they use. Ask before you go.

I want to have my bikini line done, and then some… can I just blurt this out?
Yes, your technician has worked on every part of the body and in EVERY orifice. If your OB has seen it, a laser hair removal technician has as well. Just go for it if that’s the look you are going for.

It’s so expensive! Is there any reason I shouldn’t go for a deal?
Laser hair removal seems to be a top-5 GroupOn groupie. You can get some awesome deals. With that said, Look for a place with a good reputation, or even better, a personal reference from someone you trust.

Laser Hair Removal For Men

Laser Smooth Company_Men_and_laser_hair_removal

Laser hair removal is a procedure that offers great convenience for men just as much as women. If you are a man and still have some uncertainty about laser hair removal, read about how laser hair removal appeals to the male demographic:

Clearly, it’s always a personal preference, but it seems that more and more, men prefer to keep their body parts — all areas from armpits to calves — smooth and hair-free. And while the delicious stripper dramedy may be so last year by this point, there’s still a pertinent dialogue surrounding all things smooth skin for the male gender. According to a recent poll in Men’s Health, 33 percent of men admitted to trimming their leg hair, while another 15 percent say they shave frequently. EvenMashable entered the conversation, posting a recent article about the ins and outs of male grooming — on the backside.

Ahem, on that note, we felt it was ripe time to get to the bottom of the follicle problem to see just how many more men are opting for the Magic Mike look (Mr. Tatum’s dance moves not included). Pret-a-Reporter caught up with an expert in the field, Dr. Ramin Sarshad, about the spike in hair removal business he’s seen from men at his Culver City-based Cosmetique Aesthetics. Sarshad has been medical director of the clinic since 2005, and while he won’t reveal any client names, its proximity to Sony Pictures Entertainment lot means that he likely counts some Hollywood insiders on his client list.

But about that hair removal biz…

Pret-a-Reporter: Manscaping has received loads of attention recently as the spotlight turns to hair removal procedures for men. Have you seen a change in your business in terms of male versus female demographic?

Sarshad: Yes, we have seen a lot more men coming in and receiving laser hair removal treatments. We have always had a loyal male customer base for services such as fillers, botox, lipo and facials. Hair removal treatments have become as paramount to men as it is to many women. We have seen an upsurge in male requests for laser hair removal for difficult beards, along the neckline — for many men, hair on this part of the body grows very rapidly — and on the back. Laser hair removal for legs has become an increasing popular request amongst our male clientele too.

What is the most common area men come in for?
Most common areas seem to be the neck and back, (it means less visits to the barber, too!)

Is there a difference in laser hair removal treatments for men vs. women?
Yes, men need more sessions then women because of the hormonal difference. I always want to meet the person before undergoing a series of laser hair removal treatments to ascertain how many sessions I would recommend.

What is the biggest misconception you encounter with laser hair removal?
The biggest misconception is “the hair came back” or “the laser didn’t work,” which is not true. If you are seeing hair return then it is because the laser has re-awakened dormant hair follicles.

What is the benefit of laser over electrolysis?
There is high chances of scarring with electrolysis. You don’t have that with laser hair removal.

Winter Is the Time for Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_Winter_hair_removal

You might not be thinking about wearing shorts, t-shirts, and swimsuits this time of year, but winter is actually the perfect time to prepare for upcoming summer months. During winter, your skin pigment is typically lighter, which helps to increase the effectiveness of laser hair removal. You’ll thank yourself in a few months when you are swimsuit, short, and tank-top ready!

Laser Hair Removal
The technology in laser hair removal is largely based on skin tone, so having an even, tan line–free surface to work with means better, faster results. “Laser hair removal is best to do in the winter because there is less sun exposure than other times of the year,” says New York City dermatologist Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D., who sees permanent results in patients within four sessions, each around three weeks apart. “The laser targets pigment, therefore having the least amount of melanin makes the treatment easier, safer, and most effective.” Andréa Young, co-owner of Manhattan’s Beam Laser Spa, confirms that her practice sees yearly clients who strategically book sessions to coincide with the cooler, darker months.

Pre-Treatment Laser Hair Removal Care

Laser Smooth Company_Medium Treatment Areas

To have the most successful result possible after laser hair removal treatment, there are a few important steps to take before you come in for treatment. Make sure you complete this pre-treatment checklist before you come see us for your laser hair removal appointment:

Pre Treatment Care

  • Please give a close shave to the areas receiving treatment the morning of your appointment. For harder to reach places, such as the backside, we can provide assistance just prior to application of our laser.
  • The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned and left free from any make-up, perfumes, lotions, creams, and/or antiperspirants.
  • Areas to be treated should be as light as possible, so avoid tanning 2 weeks leading up to treatments. Also, avoid sunless tanning products leading up to your appointments.
  • Do not wax or otherwise remove the roots of the hair follicles 3 weeks prior to receiving laser hair removal. Studies suggest, however, that waxing 3 weeks prior to an appointment may increase overall efficacy – as every treated hair is now in its active state of growth.
  • Do not bleach any hair to be treated, or lighten its color.
  • You must advise us of any medications you’re currently taking or have taken in the past 6 months which increases sensitivity to light. Examples include several antibiotic and antifungal medications as well as isotretinoin.

Testament of Laser Hair Removal

Laser Smooth Company_Personal_Testamony

A helpful insight into the experience of having laser hair removal procedures done, is to read personal testimonies about individuals’ experiences. Kristie Dash, a Digital Beauty Editor, wrote down her experience with laser hair removal:

Over the past few years of young adulthood, I’ve formed a mental bucket list of things to invest in when and if I have the resources: a monthlong adventure in Asia, a Birkin bag, the finest education for my future children, the New York City Ballet, and full-body laser hair removal. Well, I’m happy to report that I’m finally in the process of checking the latter off my list. Yes, I plan to get (almost) every hair from my nose down permanently lasered off my body. Exciting, right? As someone who is very pale but has darkish body hair, I’m the perfect candidate for success. More on that later. Basically, I just never want to have to shave or wax again in my life.

By the time we got to my underarms and arms, I was a pro. There’s not much to report, but I can honestly say that, overall, it was a stress-free, well-spent 30 minutes. When the process was over, they gave me wipes to clean up the globs of gel covering my body—I must have used at least five of them—and off I went.

What people don’t know is that most of the hair doesn’t come out immediately. It actually takes a couple of weeks for it to fall out. After almost two weeks, on the dot, I had to shave my legs because I didn’t want to be stubbly for a massage. I was starting to feel discouraged until after my post-appointment shower; something about the shave and the massage must have exfoliated the dead hairs out because my legs were as smooth as a baby seal. Over the course of the next month, even after one treatment, I shaved significantly fewer times. So far, I’ve had only two sessions, but I see real results, and I’m thrilled.

Laser Hair Removal: How Does it Work?

The Light Sheer Duet Laser uses a process called Selective Photothermalysis or target destruction. This involves raising the temperature of the target high enough to damage the viable hair cells without damaging the epidermis and the surrounding tissues. Following follicular destruction, the debris of these cells will shed out and will fill with dermal fibers after approximately 1 month. Because each individual hair cell on the body can be found in a different stage of growth (anagen, catagen, or telogen), the process of permanent hair reduction can take between 4 to 8 treatments spread out over 4 to 6 weeks between each treatment.

Laser Hair Removal for Men: Is it Worth It?

Laser Smooth Company_Men and laser hair removal

The goal of laser hair removal is the same for women and men alike: Get rid of the pesky hair that you are tired of constantly shaving or waxing away. But, for many men, the idea of laser hair removal might have not have even crossed their minds. In truth, laser hair removal is for men and women and is a procedure meant to be utilized by all.  Read this account of by the style and grooming editor of Men’s Fitness, Barret Wertz, and his experience with the laser hair removal process:

I’m not a particularly hairy guy. Some here to trim, some there to shave, but over all, I’m pretty standard in the hair department. Except for one area: the back of my neck. It’s basically full bush seven days post-haircut. I know you guys can feel me on this. Luckily, being Men’s Fitness‘ Style and Grooming Editor means I’m inundated with information about the newest and coolest grooming innovations.

So, I have tried seemingly every method there is to tame my neck hair from shaving to waxing, and even depilatory cream. Up until recently, I thought anything more serious would require time, pain, and a lot cash. But when I heard about the newest incarnation of laser hair removal, I had to try it myself, tackling my neck-bush with a little more gusto than I have in the past.

I met with the renowned Dr. Tina West of the West Institute outside Washington D.C. to explore my hair removal options. First and foremost, I learned that it is not actually hair removal, it is reduction. It’s not a cure-all for any excess hair I may have. I will never be able to just forget I have neck hair. But, I would see a huge improvement, I was told. I might even be able to avoid special neck-hair-only shaves at the barber.

So it was time to get to it. I assumed there would be numbing creams and robes and a lot of discomfort. Not so. Dr. West used the brand new LightSheer Duet for the procedure. The LightSheer Duet is a state of the art laser used for hair reduction. It allows for large treatment spot size and it’s up to five times the speed of earlier laser hair reduction technology.

“Men are oftentimes seeking lunchtime treatments that are now possible with more efficient laser hair reduction that is fast and painless, without the extra time previously required for numbing creams,” says Dr. West. “The big advantage of laser hair reduction compared to other methods of hair removal is that the laser is the only technology that changes the way the hair grows back, causing it to grow back finer and more slowly.”

First, Dr. West took a look at my neck to determine how good of a candidate I would be. Turns out, laser hair treatments work best on fair skin and dark hair. That’s because the less melanin and the more pigment in your skin, the better the laser will work.  Does that mean it’s not worth trying if you have a summer glow? No, but it does mean it may be best to wait until the cooler months so you can get a few treatments done before swimsuit season circles back. This also means you should tackle this while in your younger years as gray or white hair does not respond to the laser. I am fair skinned with light brown hair (and maybe a few grays, I’m not embarrassed), meaning I should be a good candidate.

So there I sat, patiently waiting what I was expecting to take at least an hour, maybe two. Where was the robe I was to change into? When do I get a towel to bite down on while they shoot laser beams into my neck? Should I expect a a week of recovery time? More!? Well in reality, it was so quick. From start to finish (aside from me being extra inquisitive due to the fact that I was going to be writing this up) it was 20 minutes. Assume about 45 minutes to an hour for the entire back. (I will talk a little later how much easier that will be soon!)

The pain was minimal. It just felt like a slightly warm shock. It was more of a nuisance than actual pain, though it was uncomfortable for a couple days afterwards. The closest thing I can relate it to is a sunburn. Two days of using the sample Dr. West gave me of Eau Thermal Avene Cicalfate POST-PROCEDURE and making sure to use a LOT of sunscreen (which is a no-brainer) I was pretty much good-to-go.

So, I was done! One treatment is it, right? Nope. Not at all. Traditional laser hair treatments typically take six or so treatments to achieve the desired results, with the occasional follow-up treatments following when desired. This is because not all your hair grows in at once. Some hairs are in the growth phase, while others are in the dormant phase. Hairs in the dormant phase, much like white hairs, will not respond to the treatment. So, you have to head back, ideally in about six weeks, to hit those guys once they have started growing. The new LightSheer is actually more powerful than it’s predecessors and can cut the number of times required for expected results in half. So, that’s three sessions instead of six.

Now, like I mentioned earlier, the future of laser-assisted hair reduction for men is advancing, and fast. Lumenis (the company that created LightSheer) is introducing the LightSheer Infinity which has a larger spot size for even faster treatment. That means, those of you with hairy backs can rejoice—it will be even easier to deal with areas that big.

Growth in the hair removal market has relatively stabilized in women, but men are predicted to continue to be a growth segment due to advancing technologies and increased consumer awareness. As of 2013 it was the second-most popular minimally-invasive procedure behind Botox.  Personally, I’m shocked more guys are getting Botox than laser hair removal.

So to wrap up, if you’ve never considered laser hair reduction an option, it may be time to think again. Stop fighting back the tears while Helga rips out your hair with antiquated wax and strips. Laser hair reduction, especially with the new, high powered LightSheer laser, is the way to go.
